                                TOP  10 CIVIL WAR JOBS! 

 

 

 

  Here is the list of the Top 10 jobs of the civil war.  The jobs range everywhere from people who fought in the civil war, and people who were not fighting in the war.  Although some jobs played a more important role than others, they all made a great contribution to the civil war and made our life living in the United States much easier!

   

 

 1. Generals

General Robert E. Lee

 

Civil War Generals were very important during the civil war. They decided the war tactics and were leaders for the rest of the soldiers. They led the groups of soldiers and had to make decisons for their troops. More than 1,000 generals served during the American Civil War. One famous general was General Robert E. Lee. They made a great contribution during the Civil War.  

  2. Soldiers

Being a soldier was one of the most important duties in the Civil War. A soldier's job was to fight during the Civil War. A tremendous amount of men committed to this job had to go through many hardships such as lack of food and spread of many horrible diseases. A soldiers salary ranged from $10-$15 per month. The three main types of soldiers include infantrymen(most important soldiers), cavalrymen, and artillerymen. When soldier's weren't fighting, they were usually training, doing daily activities at camp, and playing games to past by time.   

 

 3. Nurses

The nurses during the Civil War were known as the "Angels of the battlefield". There were about 2,000 nurses in the north and south combined. The number one thing nurses had to deal with were loss of limbs! Their main task was to aid the sick/hurt soldiers. Without the nurses, many of the soldiers would not be able be as healthy as they were.

 

 

  4. Surgeon

 Surgeons were the people who stitched up the soldiers and treated their wounds after the nurses were finished seeing what was wrong with them. A surgeon was the person who performed amputations on soldiers. They aided the soldiers that were seriously injured or ill. Surgeons made a great contribution in aiding the soldier.

 

 

 5. Guards

 Regardless of the weather, the guards always protected the camps. Their job was to march back and forth making sure enemies were not near by. Guards played a small role in the Civil War. If they saw an unknown man wandering about in the camps, they would make sure they would leave. 

 

  6. Spies

 Some of the best spies are the ones that are not expected. During the civil war most spies were women.  They would go to war disguised as men or just eavesdrop at social events. One spy during the Civil War was Pauline Cushman.

 

  7. Sailors/marines

The job of marines/sailors was not as important as other jobs in the civil war. A Marines was experienced soldier that specialized in aboard activity.   Lincoln set out Blockades as soon as the war started. The Union had plenty of ships, but the Confederacy lacked, so they had help from England. The basic duty of the Marines was to act as security guards on the ships.  Marines usually earned about $10 per month.  Also, many marines joined the landing Army.  

 

   8. Factory Workers

This occupation was most common in the North because in the South they used slaves on plantations that produced either tobacco or cotton. In factories, they either sewed clothing or made food.

 

  9. Teacher

The job of a teacher was teach at school houses. They needed many teachers because there were many new people coming to the country that did not speak english. Teachers played a small role during the Civil War era.

 

 10. Farmer

 Farmers stayed at home and worked on their farms. They mostly worked on plantations with slaves in the South and in the North, they worked in factories and businesses.
